Helpful Tips and Variations:
Homemade shredded potatoes: For this recipe, I use store bought bag of shredded hash browns, but you can make it at home. Wash and peel your potatoes, use a box grater for the shredding then rinse in a strainer. After, let your shredded potatoes sit for about 5 minutes in a bowl filled with cold water to remove excess starch. Finally, drain very well and squeeze to dry. (You can simply squeeze the water by hand, or using a cloth or towel).
Best Potatoes for this recipe: If you’re making your own shredded potatoes at home, it’s preferable to use starchy potatoes such as Russets or Idaho potatoes.
Cheddar cheese substitute: You can use some Parmesan cheese or any other cheese you have at hand.
Other ways to prepare Hash-brows: I prefer to bake hash browns in the oven or air fryer for a healthy- ish version but you can also prepare these nice and crispy hash browns by frying them.
Seasoning: Do not hesitate to try different spices suitable to your taste. For this recipe, I kept things simple by using only garlic powder, but you can add some dried oregano and onion powder or whatever spices you like best.
Mix-ins: Personalize your hash browns recipe by adding any mix-ins you prefer. You can include some shredded onion, ham, bacon, diced bell peppers or ground meet.
For spicy food lovers: You can incorporate some cayenne pepper, green chiles or sliced jalapenos for a touch of heat.
Optional Toppings: If you want to bring more flavors to this classic hash browns dish, top with some sour cream, ketchup, salsa, guacamole or your favorite shredded cheese.
