What ingredients do I need for this recipe?
4 tablespoons salted or unsalted butter (divided)
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 cup long grain rice (jasmine rice or Basmati rice, rinsed and drained)
2 cups chicken broth, vegetable broth or simply water
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon granulated garlic
4 tablespoons whole milk
½ cup parmesan cheese (shredded) – you may need more for serving
Some salt and pepper (according to taste)
As an optional garnish: parsley, green onions or chives
How to make this Parmesan Garlic Rice recipe:
Melt 3 tablespoons of butter and garlic in a medium size skillet set over medium heat. Let the garlic cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant and turns light brown.
Add the rinsed and drained long grain rice to the skillet. Keep stirring so it can toast on all sides for about 3-4 minutes. (be careful not to stir at this point; your rice can burn if you keep it too long without stirring)
Pour in the chicken broth, add the onion powder and granulated garlic, then stir well to combine.
Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet and let simmer for 10 to 15 minutes or until rice is tender and most of the liquid absorbed. (Stir your rice occasionally so it won’t burn or stick to the pan)
Once your rice is done cooking, turn off the heat and add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter, cheese and milk. Stir thoroughly until well blended.
Add some salt and pepper to taste. Top your dish with some freshly grated parmesan, fresh parsley or chopped chives and serve immediately.

Helpful Tips and Variations:
Best rice for this recipe: I personally prefer working with Basmati rice or Jasmine rice but any long grain white rice will work for this recipe. If you choose to use brown rice, be careful it may require more liquid and more cooking time.
Don’t forget to rinse your rice! It’s very essential to rinse the rice thoroughly removing the starch on the outside. Put your rice in a strainer, place it under running water to wash.
Cheese: I use Parmesan cheese for this recipe, but feel free to swap it for any other cheese you have on hand. Pecorino is a great substitute for Parmesan as they are very similar and both made from sheep milk.
Using milk: Make sure not to skip using milk in this recipe; it gives the dish a good creamy texture (a bit similar to risotto)
Chicken broth substitute: If you chicken broth isn’t available, just add in some salted butter with plain water (1 tablespoon of butter for each cup of chicken broth in your recipe). You can also simply use some vegetable broth
Optional additional veggies: You can add some fresh vegetables to your rice if that’s what you prefer. You can add in some peas, mushrooms or carrots. You can also add some baby spinach for a tad bit of color and flavor
Storing/Reheating: Keep your Parmesan rice leftovers in an airtight container safely stored in the fridge for up to 4-5 days.
To reheat your rice, add in a splash of water to regain its lively texture then simply rewarm in the microwave.
